Indian dessert recipes for Diwali 2025

Diwali is that magical time of year when homes across India shimmer with light and hearts overflow with joy. The festival is not just about the glow of diyas and the sparkle of fireworks; it is also about the warmth of togetherness and the pleasure of sharing. And nothing brings people together quite like food, especially sweets. From mithai boxes exchanged with neighbours to carefully plated desserts savoured with family after a hearty festive meal, no Diwali celebration is truly complete without indulgent treats that embody the spirit of abundance.

Traditional Indian sweets have always held pride of place during the Festival of Lights. Their richness, their fragrance, and their melt-in-the-mouth textures are symbolic of the season itself—opulent, joyous, and celebratory. Kalakand, for instance, has been a Diwali favourite for decades. Its simple preparation of thickened milk and sugar, flavoured with a hint of cardamom, is the very definition of comfort and nostalgia. Cut into neat slices, its grainy yet soft texture carries memories of childhood festivals and family gatherings. Each bite is a reminder of how the simplest ingredients, when cooked with patience, can become extraordinary.

This Diwali, when you’re planning your sweet offerings, think beyond just laddoos and barfis. Let your table celebrate both nostalgia and novelty. With Chef Ram Kripal’s recipes for Kalakand, you’ll have the perfect combination of traditional charm and contemporary flair—dishes that light up not just your festive spread, but also the faces of everyone who gathers around it.

Note:
  • Double the ingredients when cooking for more people to ensure everyone gets a fluffy stack.
  • Swap out eggs for mashed bananas, yogurt, or flaxseed mix if you're vegetarian or allergic to eggs.
  • Use buttermilk instead of regular milk for extra soft and airy pancakes.
  • Let the batter rest for 5-10 minutes before cooking to get fluffier pancakes.
  • Cook on medium-low heat to avoid burning while ensuring even cooking.
  • Add vanilla extract or cinnamon for an extra touch of flavor.
  • Top with fresh fruits, nuts, or honey for a delicious and healthy twist.
