Bengaluru’s newest rooftop destination, Kai–Bar & Kitchen, has opened 13 floors above MG Road. Spread across an expansive indoor-outdoor space, Kai is designed to be flexible—part restaurant, part lounge, and part bar—offering different experiences through the day and evening. The name “Kai” carries several meanings across languages, including “restoration,” “food,” and “sea,” which reflects the founders’ intent to create a space that adapts to the guest rather than follow a rigid concept.

The Setting

Kai offers a 360-degree view of the city, with the historic Army Cantonment forming part of the panorama. The elevated location provides an uninterrupted skyline, especially striking at sunset.

Designed by Maze Concept Design Studio (Koushik B R, Priyanka M C, and Nithya Niranjana), the interiors combine Indian elements with contemporary finishes. The ceiling of the main bar is patterned after peacock feathers and illuminated in shades of copper and walnut. Programmable lighting allows the mood to shift from calm dining to a more vibrant evening atmosphere. Seating includes a mix of semi-open lounges, private dining rooms, and a terrace area meant for sundowners.

The Menu

Head Chef Virendra Singh Chauhan leads the kitchen, which offers a mix of Asian and Mediterranean influences. Diners can expect small plates such as Edamame with Sichuan pepper, Kyoto Mushrooms with hot coriander sauce, and Spanish-style Gambas al Ajillo made with Cochin prawns. Signature dishes include Paneer Khurchan Tart, Porcini Risotto, Malabar Seared Fish, Slow-Cooked Laal Maas, and Lamb Tagine. The dessert menu features options like Yuzu & Matcha Cheesecake and After Dark chocolate pudding.

The Bar

The drinks programme, led by Ashish Adhikari, features a wide range of spirits—from Japanese whiskies (Yamazaki, Hibiki) and Indian single malts (Godawan, Paul John) to tequilas such as Don Julio 1942. The cocktail menu combines familiar classics with house creations like the Silk Road Blossom (vanilla vodka, jasmine tea, oat milk) and Kai Negroni (butter-washed rum, coffee-infused vermouth). Non-alcoholic options include mocktails such as the Togarashi Twist and KopiCocoa.
