Music + food = The ultimate combo for the soul.

Music + food = The ultimate combo for the soul.

There’s something wildly romantic about the soft crackle of vinyl—how it warms a room instantly, softens the edges of the day, and makes even an ordinary cappuccino feel like you’re part of a cinematic montage. The charm of anything vintage is quite incomparable.

Today we can see a rise in the love for everything retro because so much detail went into something as simple as playing music, taking a photograph, or making a phone call. That’s exactly why music from a cassette recorder or vinyl player, or a photo taken on a digital camera, hits different. And while streaming might have taken over the world, the city of romance and romanticism has built pockets where the needle still drops, the speakers hum, and the food tastes just a little better because the soundtrack is just right. Enter Mumbai’s vinyl cafés: tiny sanctuaries where music isn’t just background noise but the very soul of the space.

These spots champion good tunes with the same passion they pour into their menus. You’ll find walls lined with records begging to be flipped through, turntables spinning everything from Lata Mangeshkar to Joni Mitchell, and baristas who double as impromptu music critics. It’s the kind of place where you bite into a sandwich and immediately want to Shazam the track playing—until you remember you can just ask the person behind the counter, who probably handpicked it.

Think of them as Mumabi’s answer to Tokyo’s jazz kissaten—intimate, nostalgic, deeply personal cafés where food and music aren’t separate experiences but two halves of the same mood board. Whether you’re craving a stack of pancakes with some Fleetwood Mac, a pour-over accompanied by classic rock, or a lazy afternoon flipping through vinyl while biting into something buttery, these cafés serve vibes (and very great food). For all those who lack themselves some vitamin M(usic), this one’s for you.

So, tune the needle, order something delicious, and prepare to fall in love with the sound of the city—one record, one bite, one memory at a time.

Cafe Mondegar

Cafe Mondegar made music cool as part of cafe culture in Mumbai—I said it and I won’t take it back. Before vinyl cafes were a thing, Mondegar was a thing. And not only was it just another restaurant, but it was also one of the most sought-after and hip places to be in all of the city, right in the heart of Colaba. I mean, it’s one of Bombay’s OG’s for a reason, right?

Mondegar firmed its footing in Mumbai back in 1932, introducing one of the city’s first jukeboxes paired with beautiful murals by the artist Mario Miranda. It was founded by Iranian Zoroastrians (Parsi settlers) as an Irani café, which later transitioned into a restaurant and bar.

The highlight? The food, obviously, but also their infamous jukebox, which plays all of retro Bollywood, to Michael Jackson and The Beatles. Their on-tap beer is especially popular for its crisp, authentic taste, while the food? Don’t even get me started! Everything from club sandwiches to roast chicken with mashed potatoes is absolutely delicious, made fresh, and extremely clean. They serve continental, Goan, and Indian cuisines, and the crowd favourites include their house roast beef, omelettes, and king prawns.

The best part is the music that pairs with your food! Coins to play your song of choice can be purchased from the counter and subsequently used to operate the juke box. It’s the best of retro India, all in one place! The vibes are top-notch, and the interiors are a delight for the eyes, thanks to the beautiful murals all around.

No one can go just once, so visit at your own risk!

Baroke

Moving on to more listening-oriented, made-for-music type spaces in Mumbai, Baroke obviously comes first. If there’s one place in Bombay where you go to listen with your heart more than your ears, it’s Baroke. Tucked away in Grant Road, Baroke bills itself as the city’s first vinyl-only listening bar, and it wears that badge with pride.

From the moment you step in, the vibe is unmistakably analogue—soft, warm, intimate, intentionally undigital. What makes Baroke especially special is the music-first approach. The record crates offering over 220 hand-picked vinyl records span legends from the ’60s to ’90s—think Hendrix, Stan Getz, The Doors, George Benson, and more. There’s no streaming, no pre-set playlists, just a dedicated Vinyl specialist spinning records night after night, so what you hear is raw, unfiltered, and full of crackle and soul.

But vinyl and nostalgia aside, this isn’t just a music museum: Baroke wraps its sonic love in good food and thoughtful drinks too. There’s a tapas-style menu serving bite-sized and easy-to-share small plates that are designed to complement the mood: nothing too heavy, nothing too loud, just enough to keep you tapping your foot between tracks.

On the drink side, their cocktail program, is as carefully considered as the record list: inventive concoctions that take flavours, textures, and moods seriously. Some crowd favourites include feel-good funk (gin with kaffir and lemongrass, warmed with a spiced red-wine reduction, and finished with white-wine air) and Headliner (made with tequila, rocket leaves, elderflower, and some tonic).

The ambience captures that old-school warmth that we all crave and love: walnut wood, soft lighting, plush sofas, and a vibe that leans cosy over edgy. There’s even a dedicated headphone zone, for nights when you just want to slip into your own soundscape, sip something slow, and forget the world outside.

If you love records, raw grooves, good drinks and chill vibes, put this one on your must-visit list!

Records.Coffee by Veranda

If the name isn’t enough of an indication, this spot is all about good tunes and a delicious brew.

Walking into Records.Coffee feels a bit like stepping into someone’s living room—if that living room had giant windows, walls lined with vinyl records, soft natural light, and the promise of a really good cup of coffee. The café is tucked away in Pali Hill, Bandra West, and the moment you enter, you know their intention is simply to serve a damn good time. What makes it special is, of course, the listening experience, brought to you in collaboration with The Revolver Club.

Records.Coffee offers a real record-listening experience. You can browse through crates of vinyl records, pick one you love, drop the needle on the turntable, and let the music play while you sip. It’s quiet, unhurried, and feels like a lovely tribute to analogue nostalgia in a digital-everything world.

As for the coffee, the menu ranges from classic espressos and lattes to iced coffees, flavoured lattes, frappes and more. There are also brunch-to-dessert food options: toasts, sandwiches, croissants, baked treats, and more substantial light-meal fare, all approachable and welcoming.

Records.Coffee hits that sweet spot between being a casual café and a music lounge. Whether you want a solitary coffee + music afternoon, a casual catch-up with a friend over warm croissants and old-school tracks, or a quiet corner to work on the laptop while 90s Bollywood or jazz rains on the speakers—this place must be on your list.

Katha Coffee

Katha Coffee is the kind of place that immediately tells you it’s not here to rush you out the door—it wants you to linger, feel the music, and sip away.

Katha brings together two of the greatest slow pleasures in life: a good cup of coffee and the warm crackle of vinyl. Their space often features records spinning on a turntable, a nod to their association with The Revolver Club, and it sets a tone that instantly feels different from your usual caffeine pitstop. Instead of loud chatter or over-designed interiors, you get soft analogue sound floating through the room, the kind that makes you sip a little slower and look up from your laptop a little more often.

The menu is comforting and familiar—classic cappuccinos, well-made lattes, cold brews, frappes, and a bunch of teas and snacks that make it just as easy to settle in for a long afternoon as it is to pop by for a quick caffeine fix. But the coffee isn’t the only thing doing the talking; the vibe is everything. There’s something about flipping through vinyl sleeves between bites of a sandwich or sipping a strong, no-nonsense espresso while a retro melody plays in the background that makes Katha feel like an escape hatch from the city’s chaos.

It’s the kind of café where you could spend hours reading, journaling, making plans with friends, or simply zoning out to the deliciously nostalgic soundtrack. In a city full of hyper-energetic cafés and Instagram-friendly corners, Katha Coffee stands out because it isn’t trying too hard. It’s intimate. It’s unpretentious. It’s music-forward without being gimmicky. And for anyone who believes that good coffee tastes even better with great music, this cosy little spot is pretty much a love letter written just for you!

The Dimsum Room

To me, walking into The Dimsum Room feels like stepping into an alternate world, where cocoa-steam dumplings meet crackling vinyl, and Cantonese-style dim sum sits side-by-side with retro records and soft lighting. The restaurant is perched in a heritage building in Kala Ghoda, but its soul is equal parts old-school Hong Kong teahouse and analogue-era music lounge.

The heart of the experience is their Listening Room—a space acoustically tuned for vinyl playback, designed by experts so you can truly hear your music without losing the conversation at the table. Equipped with a state-of-the-art sonic room designed by Munro Acoustics, this space combines jazz and modern electronic beats to create a hearty and lively atmosphere in the restaurant. On any given evening, you might catch jazz, old-school soul, downtempo electronica or vintage classics cracking through powerful speakers.

As for food, it’s serious dim sum business. The Dimsum Room offers over 40–50 varieties of dumplings, cheung-fun, soup dumplings (xiao long bao), steamed and pan-fried parcels, baos and more. There are vegetarian and vegan options too—from crystal dumplings and tofu-based sui mai to mixed-mushroom cheung fun. Beyond small plates, the menu ramps up with mains like wok-crisped rice with braised pork belly, brown-butter fried rice, hearty noodle soups, and more filling Cantonese-style dishes. And the cocktail menu is even better. Read: they serve a matcha-based cocktail that’s currently the talk of the town.

If you want more than food and music, The Dimsum Room has that too—there’s a terrace garden for open-sky dining, a speakeasy-style bar that mixes Hong Kong tea-house influences with cocktails, and a relaxed layout where you can linger over conversation, a drink, and records.

If you’re hungry for good food, music, and vibe, this one should definitely be on your radar!
