These Matcha Bars In Mumbai Are (Definitely) Worth The Hype

Matcha girlies—assemble!

Strawberry matcha is my personal favourite variant of this super green and super delish drink.

Matcha this, matcha that. If you’ve been on Instagram for more than five minutes, you already know that Bombay has been taken over by matcha. It’s in lattes, in soft-serves, in croissants, in tiramisus, in cocktails—basically, if it’s edible, someone in the city has figured out how to make it green, and we are here for it. If I had to describe 2025 in one word, I would most definitely use matcha. Never have I ever seen a beverage blow up so much that it has come to define a whole period in time—in my mind, at least.

For a city that survives on cutting chai and cold brews, Bombay’s sudden matcha obsession feels almost cinematic—like someone hit fast-forward on a trend the rest of the world spent years perfecting. One minute, matcha was that “Pinterest girl beverage” no one fully understood; the next, it became the drink of choice for everyone who owns a claw clip and is at least mildly interested in wellness. And unlike most trends that float into the city and disappear faster than a Bandra parking spot, matcha has dug in its heels. It’s not just a menu item anymore; it has become a whole identity.

Part of this shift has to do with how the city itself has changed. Mumbai is consuming cafés differently now. And matcha, with its soft green colour and calm energy, has become the perfect antidote to the chaos and hustle of the city. Suddenly, you’re seeing matcha lattes on desks in co-working cafés and matcha-based cakes and sweets taking over dessert menus—basically a matcha-pocalypse taking over the city. And what’s even better? People aren’t just drinking it because it looks good on Instagram; they’re drinking it because the matcha here has finally become good.

The cafés leading this green wave aren’t treating matcha like a cute trend. These are places where the staff knows the difference between grassy and bitter, where iced matchas aren’t watery and warm, and where it’s hand-whisked, with love. In short, the city has learned how to treat matcha right, which is why these new matcha bars are drawing in crowds of loyalists. The matcha girlies—yes, they are a real demographic—come armed with an almost spiritual trust in the green drink before them.

Bombay’s matcha scene has arrived, and these are all the spots you need to visit for the best green-coloured goodness in town!

Blondie

Widely acknowledged as the best matcha in all of the city by avid connoisseurs, Blondie is known to have been one of the first spots to quench our thirst for matcha in Bombay, thanks to their in-house matcha bar.

Launched by Bastian Hospitality, Blondie’s matcha is sourced from Kagoshima, Japan—yes, that’s why their matcha is so high quality, and perfectly green. The cafe is woody, Earthy, and full of nature-inspired elements, while the menu is so, so diverse. The best part? The beverage menu is longer (and better!) than the food menu. While Blondie is quite popular for its speciality coffee as well, the matcha has my heart. From mango and strawberry variants to matcha drinks that sound like desserts, they’ve got it all. What they offer is a thoughtful, elevated matcha experience: the traditional matcha latte is smooth and umami-rich, while creative spins like the dreamy s’mores matcha, layered with house-made chocolate and marshmallow cream, feel indulgent without being gimmicky. The fruitier drinks, on the other hand, lean into Mumbai’s seasonal sunshine, making it feel like a summer day captured in a cup.

Mokai

Ever heard of the infamous Bandra lore that you’ll often find more people outside the cafe, queuing up in hopes of entering soon, than how many are actually inside? Well, it’s true, and Mokai is one of the many to prove it.

Drive up Chapel Road and you’ll find this beautiful, too-cute-to-be-real, Instagrammy, and so, so aesthetic cafe, that looks like it escaped from behind one of the many doors in ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ The exterior walls are painted in waves and pink skies, with lots and lots of teddy bears and camera ornaments to give company. Mokai feels like someone picked up a café in Tokyo, added a splash of pastel graffiti, and dropped it right into the heart of Bandra. And if that’s the outside, the interiors are even better, and what’s on the menu is the very best.

What makes Mokai’s matcha moment so special is its interactive and experimental feel. Yes, the menu—it’s as long as a children’s story book—has so many drinks to offer, but my personal favourites are the experiences. You can whisk your own ceremonial-grade matcha (sourced from Uji, Japan) with a bamboo whisk, which somehow elevates the experience of simply drinking it. Their matcha menu itself is a playground, of course: pistachio matcha, taro boba matcha, mango matcha, tiramisu matcha latte, Madagascar vanilla matcha, and even collagen matcha—and each is layered more innovatively than the other, chock full of sweet, umami, or fruity notes. One of the most buzzed-about creations is their Yakult iced matcha—yes, that’s matcha and probiotic Yakult in a glass, served over ice. The result? Creamy, tangy, and surprisingly smooth. A drink that feels like your gut did you a favour.

Tokyo Matcha Bar

Entering this tiny spot in Bandra feels like you’ve entered an eatery right out of a Studio Ghibli film—it’s green, pink, and very, very cute, serving everything good (and delicious) in the world. From matcha tres leches and croissants to matcha honey toast and pancake, the bar is very dedicated to everything its name stands for. And these are just the desserts! Their matcha lattes are to die for, and this is coming from someone who used to say “matcha tastes like grass” until she tried this extremely special one.

Opened by Meher Kohli (of Ritual Daily Coffee) and Michelin-starred chef Rahul Ramnani, this is Mumbai’s first proper matcha bar—a serene, wabi-sabi–inspired hideout that feels like a gentle breath in the middle of a hectic city. And on the matcha menu, there’s too much to summarise, but here are a few of my favs. There’s a matcha vanilla Bean latte and a birthday cake one that balances the vegetal bitterness with soft creaminess, and a cookies & cream matcha latte that could double as dessert (in the very best way). For hot days, they serve things like a frozen matcha lemonade and a wild berry matcha iced tea, refreshing without compromising the matcha’s depth. Health-conscious? There’s serving a fresh lime matcha and an “iced matcha detox” too.

There’s too much to drink and far too much to love, so visit ASAP. Bonus: they even sell their very own and very green house-made matcha powder!

DRNK

If you’re hunting for a spot that screams “Gen Z café goals” and doesn’t mind leaning hard into the Insta-trendy side of things, DRNK might just be the one for you. Opened by young founders Aryan Gandhi and Raj Thakkar, the place is built around aesthetic coffees, matcha, and food that looks good and tastes even better—it’s not a quiet matcha shrine, which is exactly what has got us obsessed.

Leaning into bits from our childhoods, they serve their food in steel tiffin boxes, and their birthday cake matcha with a candle on top. With neon signs, bright colours, and a playlist that’s playing the best of what’s on Billboard at the moment, DRNK is one of the coolest contemporary cafes to be at, at the moment.

On the matcha menu, my personal favourite is the hot girl matcha—the kind of drink you order when you want the matcha flavour without the seriousness of ceremonial green tea. It’s creamy, sweet, a little playful, and honestly feels like matcha on a night out. Purists might look away; everyone else will happily sip. Other Insta-worthy drinks include the Kyoto cloud matcha, the strawberry matcha, the birthday matcha, and the banana pudding matcha. At DRNK, it’s clearly matcha all the way, and we are hooked!

Boojee Cafe

What’s on the lips of your favourite Gen Z celebs? Yes, that’s right, it’s Boojee.

This spot has made a name for itself across the city, for being more than just a cafe—Boojee has turned into a lifestyle, serving everything from breakfast to dinner, and everything in between. The interiors somehow feel both luxe and laid-back: warm woods, soft lighting, comfy corners, and large windows that bathe everything in a golden glow. Visit, and you’ll best believe you’ll be greeted with a long queue, even on a weekday. Don’t forget to wait because you are in for a very yummy treat.

Case in point: their matcha. Their iced jaggery matcha latte mixes Japanese haru matcha with the earthy sweetness of jaggery, making for a drink that feels mildly sweet and very green. For a tropical twist, you can try the iced coconut matcha—a strong alternative to Vietnam’s coconut coffee we all know and love—which blends matcha with coconut water and is topped off with a fluffy coconut matcha cloud. They also serve a hot blonde matcha, perfect for winters—if you can have any in this city—made with caramelised white chocolate. It’s like comfort in a cup. For coffee lovers, there’s even an iced Almond vanilla matcha with micro-foam, and a version that pairs matcha with espresso (“dirty matcha” style).

Boojee is the perfect spot for any kind of outing, but especially the matcha kind. Quick, join the queue soon!
