Experience the art of fire-based cooking at HOM, Mumbai.

Mumbai’s enjoys an eclectic and ever growing food scene with new restaurants coming up every few days. With a diner who is as demanding as experimental, chefs across restaurants, risk flavours and combine ingredients to serve unique dishes. From a Greek-inspired restaurant to a bar that marks Sanjay Dutt’s entry into the F&B space, here’s a list of Mumbai’s newly-opened restaurants that you should check out before you plan your next outing.

HOM

HOM, Bandra’s newest hotspot, brings Chef Saurabh Udinia’s (who also helmed the kitchen at Revolver, Singapore, that won him many awards) modern Indian preparations to Mumbai. The 42-seater space features a live kitchen in the indoor dining room and an outdoor seating space.

They offer an 11-course tasting menu curated by Chef Udinia to spotlight ingredients and classic dishes from across the country. With all the food prepared on a coal-fired grill or a tandoor, highlights from their tasting menu include the chaat course, which greets you with dahi bhalla. The punugulus or Andhra-style rice fritters, Kashmiri morel (vegetarian version of a nihari), Parmesan kulcha with butter-tossed mushrooms, and buffala paneer are some other preparations from the menu that you must look forward to. For most who have dined at HOM, the laal maas mutton with stock khichdi leaves them surprised. It features chunks of laal maas piled on a risotto-like khichdi that is cooked in the meat’s stock.

Pair your meal with a craft cocktail from their drinks menu. You could go for Mango Bell (tequila, mezcal, mango, coconut, and yellow bell pepper) or Ashes to Oolong (Whisky, passionfruit, hojicha, and pandan).

SOPI: Subcontinent Origin Pizza Initiative

After taking Mumbai by a storm with their coffee, Subko is all set to bring great pizza slices to the city with SOPI: Subcontinent Origin Pizza Initiative. It is a speakeasy-style dining space on the loft floor of Mary Lodge and can accommodate only 25 people.

The pizza slices at SOPI are a nod to ingredients from the Indian subcontinent. A must-try is the when honey met thecha slice that pairs the Maharashtrian thecha with an in-house white sauce, zucchini, spinach, garlic confit, and spray of hot honey. The Manipuri mala is another highlight. It features a combination of an indigenous variety of Manipuri peppercorn with a marinara sauce laced with chilli crisp and notes of kaffir lime. The slice is an ode to North-east India.

The restaurant does not serve alcohol but the zero-proof mocktail compensate the absence. Must-tries include matcha-ade (that is their take on a matcha lemonade) and the f*uck inflammation lemonade (fermented turmeric, black peppercorns, fresh lime, and ginger bug soda).

Pair your pizza with an obvious tiramisu. Theirs is called not your nonna’s tiramisu.
