Onam Sadhya

Onam Sadhya

Onam is round the corner, and with it arrives the glorious Sadhya—a feast that is as much about culture as it is about flavour. Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September), the 10-day festival begins with Atham and culminates on Thiruvonam. This year, the festivities run from August 26 to September 5.

At the heart of these celebrations lies the Sadhya, a lavish meal that captures Kerala’s heritage and hospitality on a banana leaf (called vazhayila). Prepared with love, the feast traditionally offers 26–28 dishes (sometimes stretching to as many as 64) crafted with over 60 ingredients. Diners sit cross-legged and eat with their hands, which makes the experience both humbling and celebratory.

Staples like coconut, yam, lentils, and jaggery lend their richness to classics such as avial, pulissery, sambhar, and the much-loved palada. Red rice anchors the spread, while delights like sharkara varatti, pappadam, erissery, thoran, mezhukkupuratti, kootu curry, rasam, olan, parippu curry, pachadi, payasam, and an array of pickles bring texture, tang, and balance.

If you want to enjoy a hearty Sadhya this Onam 2025, here’s a roundup of the best Onam Sandhya in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata.
