Celebrating Onam in Delhi this year? Here are the restaurants serving traditional Kerala feasts across Delhi-NCR this festive season.
Onam is incomplete without a Sadhya—the elaborate vegetarian feast that brings Kerala’s flavours, traditions and spirit of togetherness to the table. Served on a banana leaf and traditionally enjoyed as a communal meal, a Sadhya is as much about ritual and abundance as it is about food, with an array of curries, pickles, vegetables, rice, savouries and payasams making up the feast.
For those in Delhi looking to celebrate Onam this year, you don’t necessarily have to travel south to experience the festival’s culinary traditions. From traditional Sadhyas that stay close to regional recipes and rituals to contemporary interpretations that bring Kerala’s flavours into polished dining rooms, restaurants across the capital and NCR are marking the festival with special menus.
Here are some of the places to try an Onam Sadhya in Delhi this year.
The Homecoming at Nadoo
This August, Nadoo marks its first Onam with The Homecoming, an intimate celebration of Kerala’s harvest festival through food, memory and tradition. Inspired by the annual return of King Mahabali—and the homecoming of Malayalis around the world—the 29-dish sadya brings the flavours and rituals of a Kerala home to Delhi and
Gurugram.
At its heart is
Chef Shri Bala, who has cooked an Onam sadya every year since beginning her food career in 2016. A collector of heirloom recipes, Bala’s feast follows the restrained Thrissur tradition, with no garam masala, onion or garlic, while drawing regional influences from across Kerala. Malabar-style banana chips, Marayoor jaggery from Idukki and house-made pickles and payasams add further depth.
The experience extends beyond the food. Nadoo’s team is being trained in the traditional order of service, the placement of dishes on the banana leaf, and the rituals surrounding the meal.
“For Onam, we are hoping to recreate the true sentiment of the experience as it would be in a Kerala home: generous, nostalgic and steeped in ritual,” says Chef Bala.
