Tracking Mumbai’s Newest Restaurant Openings

From a space dedicated to the Mahjong game to another spot turning cheesecakes into a scoops, these are six of Mumbai's newest openings that should feature on your checklists

Mumbai's new wave of openings is waiting for you
Mumbai’s dining and social scene is moving beyond the familiar restaurant-and-bar format, with new spaces turning a meal into an experience. From a café counter reimagining cheesecake as scoops with customisable toppings to a dedicated Mahjong club bringing the centuries-old game to the city’s social circuit, these openings are built around ideas as much as menus. Elsewhere, all-day diners, neighbourhood cafés and dinner-and-cocktail clubs are giving Mumbai more reasons to linger over coffee, cocktails, pizza or a few rounds of tiles. Here are some of the city’s newest and most interesting places to eat, drink, and plan an outing.

Scoops

Gone are the days when cheesecake was people’s staple dessert order. Now, dessert lovers want something new. To cater to that, Scoops gives the familiar cheesecake a playful makeover at Poetry by Love & Cheesecake’s new sub-brand in Mumbai’s Eros Building in Churchgate.
Instead of the usual slice, the concept serves cheesecake by the scoop, turning the familiar dessert into something closer to a sundae. At the dedicated counter, diners can choose from eight creamy cheesecake flavours, including Avocado, Matcha, Lotus Biscoff, New York Classic and Chocolate Brownie, with up to three scoops per serving. The fun continues with a selection of toppings, allowing each bowl to be customised to taste, with the first three toppings complimentary and additional ones available for an extra charge.
The idea is the result of extensive R&D by Poetry’s co-founder and head chef, Amit Sharma, who worked to create a cheesecake texture that could be scooped while retaining its characteristic richness and creaminess. The Eros outlet also serves Poetry’s wider all-day menu, including breakfast, continental dishes, coffee and its signature desserts.
Housed within the Art Deco Eros Theatre Building in Churchgate, the space combines the brand’s contemporary café aesthetic with the landmark’s heritage character. Scoops is currently one of the more unconventional ways to eat cheesecake in Mumbai, especially for those who like their desserts with familiar flavours and a touch of customisation.
